== Summary ==

Thirteen‑year‑old Howard Sykes lives in an English town with his parents, Quentin, an author and professor, and Catriona, a music teacher, along with his sister Anthea, nicknamed “Awful” for her constant screaming, and Fifi, the family’s au pair.

Their routine is disrupted when a huge, unnamed man, described by Fifi as “somebody’s Goon”, enters the house and announces he has come to collect the two thousand words Quentin owes to someone called Archer. Quentin then admits that thirteen years earlier, while suffering severe writer’s block after his last book, he agreed to produce two thousand words of nonsense every quarter for Mountjoy, a town official. In exchange, he was granted exemption from city taxes.
