== Summary ==

Buffy Summers, a sixteen‑year‑old student, is identified as the Chosen One, a Slayer endowed with the supernatural responsibility of combating vampires and other malevolent forces. Her transfer from a Los Angeles high school follows an incident in which the school gymnasium was destroyed, a consequence, she insists, of an infestation of vampires. Although the principal at her new school initially dismisses her disciplinary record, he later reinstates it after reconsideration.

Seeking a new beginning, Buffy and her mother relocate to a suburban community in California, situated at the boundary between its more affluent and less prosperous districts. Upon enrolling at her new high school, Buffy encounters the school librarian, an eccentric and scholarly figure who is already aware of her Slayer identity. His attempt to introduce her to the realities of her role, by presenting her with literature on vampires, initially drives her away. Nevertheless, recognising his expertise and the necessity of guidance, Buffy returns to the library and forms an alliance with him to confront the supernatural threats that emerge in her new environment.
