== Summary ==

Professor Ian Hood, an emeritus physicist and plain‑spoken Yorkshireman, works for the UK Home Office investigating abuses of scientific power and technology. Employed as a field operative, he tackles scientific crises directly and is unafraid to challenge authority or disrupt the status quo. Driven by a fierce commitment to sound science, he exposes malpractice wherever he finds it.

Still affected by the sudden death of his wife, Hood throws himself into his work, though his pursuit of the truth frequently antagonises powerful groups, from animal‑rights extremists to multinational pharmaceutical corporations. To protect him, the Home Office assigns Rachel Young, a Special Branch officer, as his security escort.

Despite his brilliance, Hood is notoriously clumsy with modern technology and a notoriously poor driver. Yet his sharp observational skills, intellectual curiosity, and underlying compassion make him an effective, if occasionally exasperating, investigator.

Rachel Young, a capable and self‑reliant officer from Dumfriesshire, brings practical judgement and a dry sense of humour to the partnership. She is unafraid to challenge Hood, and their relationship is both combative and warm. Though she lacks his academic background, her grounded common sense often saves him from difficult situations. Her only real vulnerabilities are her tendency to let Hood irritate her, and her persistent hypochondria.
