== Summary ==

The story follows ''Maria Luz'', a circus performer who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of ''Dr. Sócrates Mayer'', founder of the medical conglomerate ''Progênese''. Maria later learns that Sócrates was her biological father and that the crime scene was staged to prevent her from inheriting his estate.

The murder is connected to clandestine ''genetic experiments'' conducted by ''Dr. Júlia'', a Progênese physician who secretly engineered ''mutants'' with extraordinary abilities in a hidden laboratory on the island of ''Arraial''. Her accomplices include the hypnotic mutant ''Gór'' and the prodigious child ''Eugênio''.

The ''Mayer family'', part of São Paulo’s traditional elite, is deeply entangled in the events. Brothers Sócrates, Aristóteles, and Platão Mayer are co‑owners of Progênese alongside ''Mauro Fontes'' and'' Josias Martinelli''. Several members of the Mayer and Martinelli families possess mutant abilities, including Toni, Rodrigo, Danilo, Cléo, Lucas, and Janete.

After her arrest, Maria is aided by federal agent ''Marcelo Montenegro'', who becomes a fugitive after helping her escape. Marcelo seeks justice for his wife Mabel’s poisoning, originally intended for his mutant daughter Tatiana. Together, Maria and Marcelo evade the corrupt commissioner Taveira while investigating a series of murders linked to serial killer Eric Fulisy.

The conspiracy culminates in the revelation that Dr. Júlia ordered the murders of Sócrates, Dr. Walker, Mabel, and others to protect her research. She had previously arranged Maria’s kidnapping as an infant to prevent her from inheriting Sócrates’ wealth, which Júlia feared would jeopardise Progênese. The season concludes with attorney César Rubicão exposing Júlia’s crimes via hologram. In the subsequent series, ''Os Mutantes: Caminhos do Coração ([[Mutants: Path of the Heart, the|Mutants: Path of the Heart, the)]]'', Júlia adopts the identity Juli Di Trevi after consuming a youth serum.
