== Summary ==

A unidentified spacecraft enters ''Earth’s'' atmosphere, prompting an extensive mobilisation by the United States government. The vessel disperses radiation across a wide area of rural ''Montana'', leading officials to consider the possibility of a terrorist incident involving a radiological dispersal device. This hypothesis is quietly dismissed by the lead investigator, who questions the likelihood of an attack being directed at Montana.

Wreckage from the craft is subsequently located in ''Canada'', where investigators discover a surviving human occupant wearing a Soviet‑era space suit. The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) dispatches federal agents to the site, operating with authorisation from the ''Royal Canadian Mounted Police''. The survivor is found to be in critical condition, and initial medical tests reveal advanced cancer, prompting physicians to declare him unfit for transport.

A handwritten note in Russian recovered from the crash site claims that the man is the child of cosmonauts residing at a base on Mars. DHS officials reject the credibility of the note and, seeking a public demonstration of departmental success, order ''Agent Taylor'' to return the survivor to the United States as a suspected terrorist. Taylor, believing the note may be genuine, disregards the directive and destroys the RCMP authorisation, compelling his team to remain in Canada.

Taylor consults ''Dr. Walzer'', a specialist known for publications on the feasibility of human survival on Mars, to evaluate the implications of the incident. The episode concludes with the detection of a radio transmission and a brief display of a computer interface at the ''Baikonur Cosmodrome''.
