== Summary ==

The series centres on a covert multinational defence organisation, ''SHADO'', created to counter an ''extra-terrestrial'' species that abducts humans and harvests their organs, possibly in preparation for a future invasion. Operating beneath the cover of ''Harlington‑Straker Studios'' and commanded by former Air Force officer ''Edward Straker'', SHADO employs a layered defence system that includes the ''SID'' early‑warning satellite, ''Moonbase Interceptors'', the submarine‑launched ''Sky One'' aircraft, and tracked ground Mobiles, supplemented by specialised aircraft and lunar transport vehicles.

The aliens, never formally named, appear humanoid and rely on transplanted human organs and a green oxygenated fluid to survive the rigours of ''interstellar travel''. Their small, high‑speed UFOs can operate briefly in Earth’s atmosphere and for extended periods underwater, emitting a distinctive electronic whine and carrying laser‑type weaponry. Some evidence suggests that certain ''aliens'' may be human hosts under extra-terrestrial mental control.
