Summary
Jake Epping, a recently divorced English teacher from Lisbon, Maine, is offered the opportunity to travel back to 1960 by his long‑time acquaintance Al Templeton. Templeton persuades Epping to undertake a mission to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on 22 November 1963. Upon entering the past, Epping gradually becomes invested in the life he constructs there, a development that threatens to compromise the objectives of the mission.
Epping is required to covertly gather information on individuals and events connected to the assassination while simultaneously establishing and maintaining a credible personal identity to avoid attracting suspicion. The tension between his investigative responsibilities and his growing attachment to his new circumstances forms the central conflict of his undertaking.
