Summary
12 Monkeys is an American science‑fiction mystery drama created by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett for Syfy. Loosely adapted from the 1995 film of the same name, written by David and Janet Peoples and inspired by Chris Marker’s La Jetée, the series follows James Cole and Dr. Cassandra “Cassie” Railly, played by Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull, as they use time travel to stop the shadowy organization known as the Army of the 12 Monkeys.
The ensemble cast includes Kirk Acevedo, Noah Bean, Todd Stashwick, Emily Hampshire, and Barbara Sukowa, with several actors portraying reimagined versions of characters from the original film. Madeleine Stowe, who starred in the 1995 movie, appears in a pivotal guest role in season two.
Natalie Chaidez served as showrunner in the first season, with Matalas and Fickett taking over in later seasons. Produced by Atlas Entertainment and Universal Cable Productions, the series ran for four seasons from January 16, 2015, to July 6, 2018, totaling 47 episodes. While the first season received mixed reviews, subsequent seasons earned stronger critical acclaim, including cinematography awards from both the American and Canadian Societies of Cinematographers.
