Summary
Earth faces imminent destruction when a massive asteroid, designated Horus, is projected to strike the planet within eight days. Scientific assessments indicate that the impact will eradicate all life in Central Europe, and international efforts, particularly those undertaken by the United States, to neutralise the object prove unsuccessful. With no remaining means of intervention, the population is forced to confront the approaching end.
The narrative centres on a varied ensemble of German characters, each responding to the crisis according to personal circumstance and temperament. Some individuals accept the inevitability of their fate, while others pursue increasingly desperate attempts to escape. These efforts are severely constrained by the geopolitical situation: to prevent mass refugee movements, numerous European states have sealed their borders.
Among those seeking survival, Uli and Susanne attempt to flee with their children to Russia. Hermann endeavours to secure passage for himself and his heavily pregnant partner Marion on an American evacuation flight. The contractor Klaus has constructed a private bunker in anticipation of catastrophe, though his daughter Nora chooses instead to spend her remaining days in hedonistic celebration with friends. The terminally ill Ben finds solace in the knowledge that the asteroid will spare him a solitary death. Meanwhile, the young criminal Robin gathers a following of impressionable youths who regard him as a messianic figure.
