Summary
Due to a catastrophic technical failure, the entire crew of an interstellar vessel perishes after landing on a distant planet. The ship remains dormant for centuries, silently awaiting new personnel capable of piloting her home. Eventually, a primitive Stone Age tribe settles nearby. The ship captures one of the tribespeople and implants within him the knowledge and memories of an original crew member. One by one, more tribespeople are transformed into surrogate crew, but their limited cognitive capacity leads to emotional instability and unpredictable behaviour.
Later, the ship encounters a more advanced species. Fearing they will be replaced by these superior beings, the converted crew abduct several of them as well. This sparks a violent conflict between the two groups of “crew members,” each fighting for survival and identity. In the aftermath, the remaining survivors set a course back toward Earth. They manage to land on the Moon—only to discover that, after centuries have passed, life on Earth has changed beyond recognition.
