Summary

The Addams Family centres on a wealthy and eccentric extended family distinguished by their macabre interests, unconventional outlook, and various supernatural abilities. Residing at 0001 Cemetery Lane in a grand Second Empire-style mansion, the family includes Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester, and Grandmama. The household is characterised by its unusual décor and extensive collection of bizarre curiosities, reflecting the family's fascination with the strange and the morbid.

Assisting the family are their loyal servants, the towering butler Lurch and Thing, a disembodied hand that performs a variety of household tasks. The family's wider circle includes recurring relatives such as Cousin Itt, Morticia's sister Ophelia, and her mother, Grandma Frump.

Much of the series' humour arises from the contrast between the Addams family's values and those of wider society. Unaware of how unconventional they appear to others, the Addamses treat visitors with warmth, hospitality, and courtesy, while their guests are often unsettled by the family's behaviour, appearance, and surroundings. The family, in turn, regards mainstream customs and sensibilities with bemused curiosity, creating a recurring culture clash that forms the basis of many storylines.
