Summary

Superman, though a champion of “truth, justice and the American way,” was fundamentally an alien, an infant survivor of the destroyed planet Krypton. Sent to Earth by his father, the scientist Jor‑El, he crash‑landed near Smallville, where he was adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent and raised as Clark Kent. Under Earth’s yellow sun, Clark developed extraordinary abilities including flight, super‑strength, X‑ray vision, enhanced hearing, and near‑invulnerability, with Kryptonite, the remnants of his home world, remaining his sole weakness.

As an adult, Clark moved to Metropolis and became a reporter for the Daily Planet. Mild‑mannered and bespectacled in his civilian identity, he transformed at a moment’s notice into Superman, the city’s tireless defender against crime. The series also featured cub reporter Jimmy Olsen, gruff editor Perry White, Inspector Henderson of the Metropolis police, and Lois Lane, the Planet’s impulsive star reporter, enamoured of Superman but dismissive of Clark. Lois was portrayed with sharp intensity by Phyllis Coates in the first season, and with a softer tone by Noel Neill in subsequent episodes.
