Summary
On 21 March 1963, 256 inmates and 46 guards vanished without explanation from the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. In response, the United States government issued a fabricated account asserting that the prison had been closed due to unsafe structural conditions and that all inmates had been formally transferred. The disappearance was concealed, and official records reflected the cover story.
At the time, Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill), then a young San Francisco police officer assigned to assist with inmate transfers, became one of the first individuals to realise that the prisoners had not been relocated but had instead disappeared entirely.
In present‑day San Francisco, the missing inmates and guards, collectively referred to as the 63s, begin to reappear individually. They show no physical signs of ageing and possess no memory of the intervening decades or of their whereabouts during the missing period. Their behaviour suggests a compulsion to seek specific objects and to resume the criminal activities for which many were originally incarcerated.
The federal government, having anticipated their return, has established a covert operations unit dedicated to locating and detaining the reappearing individuals. Hauser now leads this organisation, which includes a secure holding facility designed to replicate Alcatraz’s distinctive two‑tier cellblock layout.
To assist in identifying and apprehending the returning prisoners, Hauser recruits Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), a San Francisco police detective, and Dr Diego Soto (Jorge Garcia), a historian specialising in Alcatraz and its inmate population.
