Summary
In Tokyo, Arisu, an unemployed young man preoccupied with video games, spends his time with his friends Chōta and Karube. After a disturbance in Shibuya Crossing, the three hide in a public restroom and emerge to find the city completely deserted. That night, they are directed by an electronic billboard to a “game arena,” where mobile devices display the difficulty level of each game, represented by playing cards. They are joined by a high‑school student and a businesswoman, Shibuki, who explains that leaving an arena once entered results in immediate execution by an automated laser system.
The group participates in a three‑of‑clubs game titled Dead or Alive, which requires players to choose between two doors within a time limit, one of which leads to survival and the other to instant death. Arisu, Karube, and Shibuki survive, though Chōta is severely injured. Upon exiting, each participant receives a limited‑duration “visa,” which must be renewed by completing additional games; failure to do so results in execution.
