Summary
Adapted from Margaret Mahy’s novel, the series blends science fiction with domestic drama. The story centres on Bond, a student from the planet Galgonqua who arrives on Earth while being pursued by the formidable Wirdegens. Although Bond is the obvious outsider, the narrative also focuses on twelve‑year‑old Jacqueline (“Jake”), who feels alienated within her newly blended family following her father David’s remarriage to Pip, who has two children of her own—Dora, also twelve, and younger brother Lewis.
Jake and Dora, initially at odds, encounter Bond and reluctantly agree to help him complete his mission: reaching a specific stone circle before the Wirdegens catch him. Their journey becomes a cross‑country chase culminating at the circle, where the Wirdegens appear not as enemies but as examiners. Bond then recalls that the entire pursuit was a test of his abilities, which he has successfully passed.
