Summary
Set in 2048, the series portrays a future in which rapid technological development has contributed to a dramatic rise in crime. To address this, police officers are required to work alongside advanced android partners. The story follows Detective John Kennex (Karl Urban) of New Pittsburgh, who distrusts synthetic officers after an earlier raid on the criminal group inSyndicate left him severely injured and his partner dead when a logic‑driven android refused aid.
After emerging from a prolonged coma and coping with memory loss and a cybernetic prosthetic leg, Kennex returns to duty under Captain Sandra Maldonado (Lili Taylor). He rejects his assigned MX‑43 android and is instead paired with Dorian (Michael Ealy), an older DRN‑series model designed with human‑like emotional programming. The developing partnership between Kennex and Dorian forms the central focus of the series, exploring themes of artificial intelligence, policing, and human–machine interaction.
