Summary
The series is set approximately 360 years in the future, with most of the first season taking place in 2384 in the metropolis of Bay City. In this society, human consciousness—referred to as digital human freight (DHF)—is stored on “cortical stacks,” disk‑shaped devices implanted at the base of the neck. Originally of alien design and manufactured only from materials found on Harlan’s World, these stacks allow individuals to be transferred between biological or synthetic bodies, known as “sleeves.” Death becomes permanent only if the stack is destroyed without a backup. The wealthiest citizens, known as “Meths,” maintain practical immortality through cloning and remote storage of their consciousness.
The narrative follows Takeshi Kovacs, the last surviving member of the Envoys, an elite rebel force defeated centuries earlier. In the first season, set 250 years after the fall of the Envoys, Kovacs is released from imprisonment by Laurens Bancroft, a centuries‑old Meth who hires him to investigate Bancroft’s own apparent murder in exchange for a restored life.
The second season, set in the early 2410s, continues Kovacs’s story in a new sleeve as he searches for Quellcrist Falconer, the Envoys’ founder and his long‑lost companion.
