Summary
Tom and Geoff, two schoolboys on their summer holidays, discover an alien spacecraft buried within an ancient Roman cave. The craft, identified as Aquila, proves to be a highly advanced vehicle capable of high‑speed flight, laser discharge, and complete invisibility. After learning to operate it, the boys use Aquila for various excursions, including covert trips to school, where they conceal the craft on the roof of an old shed.
In the second series, Tom and Geoff uncover additional systems within Aquila, including non‑lethal weaponry capable of rendering individuals unconscious and a comprehensive ship’s log documenting 6,000 years of travel since the craft’s creation. The final episode reveals that Aquila possesses limited autonomous behaviour, demonstrated when the boys travel to Mars and the craft begins to act independently.
Aquila operates using air as its primary fuel source and is equipped with an advanced invisibility mechanism, enabling undetected flight. One of its control systems activates a laser weapon, which the boys accidentally use to destroy several cars, a tree, and a refuse bin. While their mothers and teachers believe the boys are distressed after discovering a skeleton in the cave, their elderly neighbour, Mrs. Murry, is the only person who suspects a more unusual explanation. Her claims of hearing strange voices and her belief that aliens are disguised as schoolboys are dismissed by those around her.
