Summary
In 1963, during the height of the Space Race, President John F. Kennedy authorised the launch of the Ascension, an Orion‑class spacecraft intended to colonise a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, thereby ensuring humanity’s survival in the event of Cold War escalation. The vessel, designated USS Ascension, was conceived as a vast, self‑sustaining generation ship carrying 600 volunteers. With a projected journey of one hundred years, only the descendants of the original crew would reach the destination.
The narrative begins fifty‑one years into the voyage, as the ship approaches the point of no return, when it must reverse orientation and commence deceleration, leaving insufficient fuel for a return to Earth. At this juncture, the first homicide since launch occurs: the mysterious murder of a young woman. The ensuing investigation prompts members of the crew to question the authenticity and purpose of their mission.
