Summary
Set in 1981, the story marks the return of DCI Gene Hunt, who has traded in his Ford Cortina for an Audi Quattro. But questions soon arise over whether the hard‑edged “Manc Lion” introduced in Life on Mars is beginning to soften. Determined to take on what he calls the “southern nancy” criminal underworld, Gene transfers to the London Metropolitan Police, accompanied by his loyal officers DS Ray Carling and DC Chris Skelton.
Gene’s world is upended when he is partnered with DI Alex Drake, a sharp, ambitious, and highly capable single mother. In 2008, Alex is a rising star in the Met, known for her expertise in psychological profiling. Her life is violently disrupted when she and her daughter are kidnapped; during an escape attempt, Alex is shot and abruptly awakens in 1981, disoriented and surrounded by figures who look as though they’ve stepped out of Miami Vice.
In this unfamiliar past, Alex encounters not only Gene and his team but also echoes of cases documented by Sam Tyler, whose reports she has studied extensively. Immersed in the neon‑lit world of early‑Eighties London—with Bucks Fizz and The Human League on the soundtrack—Alex must navigate Gene’s brash, unapologetically old‑school attitudes, particularly his Stone‑Age views on women.
As the two clash over methods, authority, and ideology, their mutual frustration gives way to a deeper connection, revealing that their partnership may be more than merely professional.
