Summary
Automan was a short‑lived American crime‑drama series centred on a computer‑generated holographic crime‑fighter created by police officer and programmer Walter Nebicher. Restricted to desk duty because of his technical expertise, Walter secretly developed Automan, a video‑game hero capable of manifesting in the real world when supplied with sufficient electrical power. Together, the pair undertook investigations into major crimes beyond the reach of conventional police work. Automan was assisted by Cursor, a floating electronic construct able to generate physical objects, most notably a high‑performance vehicle capable of making instantaneous right‑angle turns. The character also possessed abilities such as passing through solid matter, manipulating computer systems, and temporarily merging with Walter to render them both impervious to harm, though his existence was limited by high energy demands.
Despite Automan’s role in several high‑profile cases, Walter’s superior, Captain Boyd, refused to assign him to field duty, leaving only Lt. Curtis to advocate on his behalf. Walter also received occasional assistance from Roxanne, a police department receptionist and his romantic interest. The series was produced by Glen A. Larson, Donald Kushner, and Peter Locke, with writing contributions from Larson and Doug Hayes Jr. and direction by Lee Katzin, Winrich Kolbe, and Kim Manners.
