Summary
The series follows the Mars Joint Initiative, the first crewed mission to Mars, commanded by American astronaut Emma Green. Serving as her deputy is an Indian medical officer, while the remainder of the five‑person international crew comprises a Chinese chemist, a distinguished British botanist undertaking his first spaceflight, and a veteran Russian cosmonaut who holds the record for cumulative time spent in orbit. Emma’s husband, himself an astronaut, had trained alongside her and was once a candidate to lead the mission before a medical condition ended his eligibility.
The three‑year expedition departs from the lunar surface. Early in the journey, several crew members question Emma’s suitability for command following her handling of an initial crisis, creating tension as the team begins its long transit toward Mars.
