Summary
Set primarily in the 1990s, the series centres on the Async Research Institute, a fictional organisation specialising in MRI‑related research. During the course of its experimental work, Async uncovers and establishes an access point to the Backrooms, referred to in‑universe as the Complex, and initiates efforts to study, survey, and document the environment.
Following this breakthrough, the number of missing persons cases increases dramatically, attributed to individuals being involuntarily drawn into the Complex from locations far beyond Async’s facility. Most instalments focus on the anomalies and phenomena encountered by Async personnel within the Complex, while entries designated Found Footage present the experiences of civilians who inadvertently enter the space and attempt to navigate it independently.
