Summary
The series features Anne Foy as Penny Dreadful, a cheerful and good‑natured yet troubled thirteen‑year‑old who persistently attempts to counter the surreal and often unscrupulous schemes devised by her morally wayward family. Penny’s ineffectual and browbeaten father, Pa, is portrayed by comedian Graham Fellows, also known for his comic persona John Shuttleworth.
In each episode, Penny is confronted not only with the dubious activities of her parents and brother but also with an assortment of eccentric and otherworldly figures who emerge from her wardrobe, which intermittently functions as a portal to alternate dimensions and periods in time. Regarded as the family’s “black sheep” due to her refusal to engage in their criminal pursuits, Penny is compelled to rectify their peculiar misdeeds while simultaneously contending with the strange and occasionally dangerous creatures that cross into her world through the wardrobe.
