Summary
During a visit to the preserved battleship Mikasa on the coast of Yokosuka, schoolboys Fumihiko Wada (Hoshino) and Mitsugu Ito (Sawamura) are unexpectedly transported back in time to the year 1862. They arrive in the foreign settlement of Yokohama, where their unfamiliar clothing and behaviour lead local authorities to suspect them of criminal activity. Forced to evade capture, the boys must navigate a turbulent period in Japanese history.
Their arrival coincides with the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate, a time marked by political unrest, anti‑foreign sentiment, and competing factions seeking to restore imperial authority. As they attempt to survive in this unfamiliar era, Fumihiko and Mitsugu encounter several prominent historical figures involved in the events leading to the Meiji Restoration.
Through a series of unintended actions, the boys inadvertently alter the historical timeline. Most notably, they cause the premature death of Sōji Okita, who in established history was a key member of the Shinsengumi and an influential figure during the final years of the shogunate. Their interference threatens to reshape the political developments that would have contributed to the Restoration, placing both themselves and the future they know at risk.
