Summary
Erica Strange is portrayed as an intelligent and well‑educated young woman whose personal and professional life has been marked by chronic underachievement and persistent misfortune. After inadvertently consuming a beverage containing hazelnut flavouring, to which she is allergic, she is hospitalised and encounters Dr. Tom, an enigmatic figure who asserts that he can help her address the various aspects of her life that have gone awry. Although initially sceptical, Erica soon discovers that his therapeutic method involves enabling her to travel back in time to revisit—and potentially alter, formative moments associated with her deepest regrets.
Each time Erica confronts a difficulty in the present, Dr. Tom directs her to a past event thematically linked to the issue at hand. These excursions rarely unfold as she anticipates: despite her attempts to change the outcome, the original event often still transpires, compelling her instead to uncover new information that reframes its significance. Through this process, she gains insight into how her past experiences inform her current behaviour, revealing that the purpose of the therapy is not to erase regret but to cultivate personal growth by encouraging more constructive choices in the present.
As the narrative progresses, the therapy’s limitations, complexities, and metaphysical implications become increasingly apparent. The series explores questions such as whether a patient may alter another person’s destiny, whether a therapist may intervene in a patient’s past without consent, whether foreknowledge of the future may be disclosed during a session, and whether the therapeutic experience itself is literal or symbolic. Later seasons introduce a group‑therapy framework in which multiple patients convene to discuss and analyse the time‑travel experiences of a single participant.
