Summary
In a near-future Flanders, an extreme right-wing political party comes to power on a platform of Flemish independence and implements a policy requiring all residents born outside the region to return to their countries of birth. Faced with the prospect of deportation, a young couple, Muna and Jamal, see only one opportunity to remain in Flanders: participation in The Best Immigrant, a reality television competition in which migrants compete in a series of degrading challenges to prove themselves the best Fleming. The winner is granted the right to stay in the country.
As the competition unfolds, the contestants are manipulated and set against one another by the programme's presenter, Nathan Lodewijks, and producer, Lauren Goossens. Constant surveillance, psychological pressure, and the pursuit of public approval create an increasingly hostile environment within the show.
Under the strain of the competition, Jamal gradually begins to break down, while Muna becomes increasingly determined and unpredictable. Through its dystopian premise, the series examines themes of nationalism, discrimination, media exploitation, and the human cost of exclusionary political policies.
