Summary
The story follows an alien whose spacecraft crashes on Earth, forcing him to take possession of Semyonov, a timid and indecisive lecturer in a university philology department. To his dismay, the alien discovers that humanity is burning oil, a substance that, according to his civilisation, was originally developed as a universal cure for disease rather than a source of fuel.
Determined to contact his fellow extra-terrestrials and warn them about humanity's misuse of this valuable resource, the alien plans to repair his damaged ship in secret. However, his efforts are continually disrupted by the people in Semyonov's life, including his daughter Alyona, his former wife Katya, the university dean, an enthusiastic caretaker and ufologist, and his growing attraction to his colleague Anna Mikhaylovna.
Blending science fiction and comedy, the story explores the complications that arise as the alien struggles to complete his mission while becoming increasingly entangled in the personal and professional relationships of his human host.
