Summary
The series centres on Samantha Stephens, a witch who marries Darrin Stephens, an ordinary mortal, and attempts to live the life of a conventional suburban housewife. Although Samantha is committed to adapting to the mortal world, her decision to marry a human is strongly opposed by many members of her magical family, whose frequent interference creates ongoing complications for the couple.
Much of the series' narrative revolves around the consequences of magical spells cast by Samantha's relatives and other supernatural beings. These incidents often disrupt Darrin's professional and personal life, affecting his employer, clients, neighbours, and family members. Despite the misunderstandings and chaos that result, Samantha and Darrin typically resolve each situation, reinforcing the strength of their marriage in the face of supernatural challenges.
The series depicts witches and warlocks as exceptionally long-lived beings who conceal their existence from the mortal world. Samantha, despite appearing to be a young woman, is implied to be centuries old. In order to preserve their secrecy, magical characters generally avoid displaying their powers before humans, although their supernatural activities frequently drive the plot. Samantha's most recognizable magical ability is performed through a distinctive twitch of her nose, which triggers spells and is accompanied by visual and musical effects that became a signature element of the series.
