Summary
American astronaut Mike Sklorski is launched into orbit on a mission intended to complete a single revolution around the Earth. During the flight, his spacecraft passes through the Van Allen radiation belts, regions known to contain high concentrations of charged particles. Sklorski returns to Earth appearing unaffected by the exposure; however, he soon dies under unexplained circumstances. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Weatherfield—the engineer responsible for designing the rocket—vanishes after experiencing disturbing nightmares in which he believes he has absorbed Sklorski’s memories.
When Sklorski is later reported to be alive, Sir Robert Nailer, the head of the research programme, theorises that Sklorski and Weatherfield have somehow merged into a single entity. Nailer further suspects that both men were attacked by an unknown force located beyond the Van Allen belts. Subsequent incidents reinforce his fears: pairs of men are targeted, with one individual found dead and the other disappearing without trace. After each attack, the number of victims doubles, suggesting an escalating pattern. Nailer concludes that the only remaining hope of understanding—and possibly stopping—the phenomenon lies in capturing one of these so‑called “fusions.”
