Summary
Black Lightning centres on Jefferson Pierce, the respected principal of Garfield High School in the fictional city of Freeland, Georgia. Nearly a decade before the events of the series, Pierce operated as the vigilante Black Lightning, but withdrew from crime‑fighting after the escalating violence placed severe strain on his marriage to Lynn Stewart and endangered their daughters, Anissa and Jennifer Pierce.
Pierce resumes his vigilante identity when members of The 100, a powerful criminal organisation led by the ruthless Tobias Whale, kidnap Anissa and Jennifer. The incident triggers the emergence of metahuman abilities within both daughters: Anissa develops density‑manipulation powers and adopts the alias Thunder, while Jennifer manifests potent electrical abilities.
The series also follows Khalil Payne, Jennifer’s boyfriend, who is coerced into Whale’s service. After a gunshot wound leaves him paraplegic, Payne undergoes involuntary cybernetic enhancement and becomes a weaponised operative under Whale’s control.
A confrontation between Jennifer and a corrupt agent of the A.S.A., a clandestine government agency, results in Whale obtaining the contents of a classified A.S.A. briefcase, setting in motion a broader conflict involving metahuman experimentation, political corruption, and Freeland’s struggle for autonomy.
