Summary
Ezekiel Stone is a former police detective whose life is irrevocably altered when he returns home to discover that his wife has been raped. Acting outside the law, Stone tracks down the perpetrator and kills him in cold blood. Upon his own death shortly thereafter, Stone is condemned to Hell for committing murder, despite the circumstances surrounding the act.
Fifteen years later, a mass escape occurs within the underworld: 113 of Hell’s most malevolent souls break free and return to Earth. Recognising the need to recapture them, the Devil releases Stone back into the mortal world, offering him the possibility of a restored life should he succeed. Each fugitive soul may possess supernatural or otherwise inhuman abilities, making the task both dangerous and unpredictable.
Stone’s mandate is precise: he must locate the escapees and return them to Hell by destroying their eyes, described as the metaphysical “windows to the soul”, thereby forcing their damned essence back to its infernal origin.
