Summary
The narrative concerns an unconventional Japanese initiative known as the Earth Defence Force, established in response to escalating threats from multiple alien species. Contrary to expectations, the organization is not a conventional military body. Six civilians, a student, a musician, a teacher, a reclusive gamer, a shop assistant, and a businessman, are unexpectedly recruited to serve as its representatives.
They are transported to a secret lunar installation where diplomatic meetings with extra-terrestrial envoys are conducted. Their mission is strictly non‑violent: to persuade visiting alien delegations to abandon any plans to attack Earth and return peacefully to their respective civilizations.
Cooperation among the recruits proves difficult. Their self‑interest, lack of discipline, and limited interpersonal skills hinder progress, and none of them shows genuine enthusiasm for safeguarding the planet. Their only unexpected advantage is a peculiar one: an unusually strong body odour that, despite its absurdity, becomes their most effective deterrent.
