Summary
The series follows the operations of Spectrum, a covert international security organisation tasked with defending Earth from the Mysterons, a powerful Martian race that has declared total war on humanity. The conflict begins when a Spectrum reconnaissance mission to Mars misinterprets a benign Mysteron action as hostile and destroys their complex, prompting the Mysterons to vow vengeance. Thereafter, they wage a relentless war of attrition, issuing ominous warnings before each new act of sabotage or terror.
The "Mysterons" possess the formidable ability of "retrometabolism", the power to destroy an object or person and then reconstruct an exact duplicate under their control. This makes them uniquely dangerous adversaries, capable of infiltrating human society through perfect replicas of their victims.
To counter this threat, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson introduced a new kind of television hero: Captain Scarlet, an operative who becomes virtually indestructible after his first encounter with the "Mysterons" leaves him with his own regenerative abilities. These powers allow him to survive catastrophic events—from high‑speed crashes to nuclear‑level explosions, making him Spectrum’s most valuable asset in undertaking missions that would be impossible for any ordinary agent.
Supporting Scarlet is a diverse ensemble of colour‑coded Spectrum personnel, including field agents, commanders, and the Angel squadron, a team of highly skilled, glamorous fighter pilots. Many characters were given detailed backstories, some of which subtly connected the series to earlier "Supermarionation" productions, creating a sense of continuity within the Anderson universe.
