Summary

Captain Zep – Space Detective was structured as a “programme within a programme,” with each episode framed by scenes set in a classroom at the SOLVE Academy. The classroom participants were not actors but members of a pre‑teen studio audience, typically aged eleven to twelve, who assumed the role of trainee space detectives under the guidance of Captain Zep. Each week, Zep introduced a recorded account of one of his celebrated adventures and invited the students to analyse the events and solve the mystery presented.

The adventure segments followed Captain Zep and his associates, Jason Brown and either Professor Spiro or Professor Vana, as they travelled by spacecraft to various alien worlds. The interior of the spacecraft was realised as a physical studio set, while the extra-terrestrial environments were depicted through animated artwork. The actors were integrated into these illustrated settings using colour‑separation overlay (chroma‑key), allowing them to interact with the cartoon landscapes and characters.

Once Zep and his team had uncovered all the essential clues, the narrative returned to the SOLVE Academy classroom. Captain Zep then posed a series of questions based on the adventure, awarding prizes to any trainee detectives who answered correctly. To involve viewers at home, two additional questions were presented but not solved on air. Audience members could submit their answers by post, and those who responded correctly received a SOLVE logo and certificate. Note‑taking during the broadcast was actively encouraged.
