Summary
Catweazle was a fantasy television series that followed the adventures of Catweazle, an eccentric 11th-century wizard who is inadvertently transported to the 20th century. While attempting to discover the secret of flight in medieval England, Catweazle accidentally casts himself forward through time, where he encounters the unfamiliar technologies of the modern world. Interpreting these inventions as forms of advanced magic, he becomes convinced that everyone in the future possesses mystical abilities that remain beyond his own understanding.
Ordinary modern objects inspire both fascination and confusion in Catweazle. He refers to a light bulb as “the sun in a bottle” and a telephone as “the telling bone,” reflecting his inability to comprehend the scientific principles behind such devices. Much of the series’ humour derives from his attempts to interpret contemporary life through the perspective of a medieval sorcerer.
In the first series, Catweazle befriends Carrot, a young boy who lives on a farm with his father. Carrot provides the wizard with shelter in his treehouse and attempts to help him navigate the complexities of the modern world while preventing him from causing disruption. By the conclusion of the first series, Catweazle succeeds in returning to the 11th century, only to be accidentally transported back to the 20th century at the beginning of the second series.
During the second series, Catweazle forms a friendship with Cedric, the son of Lord and Lady Collingford. Together, the two embark upon a number of adventures as Catweazle once again seeks a means of returning to his own era. In the final episode, he ultimately succeeds in returning permanently to the 11th century after discovering the long-sought “thirteenth sign of the zodiac.”
