Summary
Tess, a fourteen‑year‑old girl who is isolated and self‑conscious, relocates with her pregnant mother to the remote North Yorkshire Dales village of Century Falls. To her disappointment, she discovers that no other children reside in the village, with the sole exception of an enigmatic pair of visiting twins staying with their uncle. Over time, Tess becomes aware that the community is concealing a long‑standing and troubling secret, one that threatens both her own future and that of her unborn sister.
In 1953, the villagers attempted to summon a supernatural entity known as Century. The ritual exceeded their control, resulting in the destruction of the temple where the ceremony was conducted and leaving several participants injured. In the aftermath, no children have been born in Century Falls for four decades. Now, as plans emerge to repeat the summoning, the village appears destined to repeat the same catastrophic mistakes.
