Summary
Based on the trilogy of novels by Peter Dickinson, the story depicts a Britain transformed by a sudden and initially inexplicable phenomenon that compels the population to destroy the material symbols of modern technology, televisions, telephones, motor vehicles, and abandon urban life in favour of a more primitive existence.
A small minority appear immune to this destructive impulse, among them the teenager Nicky Gore and a community of Sikhs who maintain their cohesion despite the societal collapse. Opposing them is Davy Gordon, an aspiring feudal warlord who seeks to consolidate power by force. After accusing Nicky of witchcraft and launching an attack on her group, Gordon pursues her and a boy named Jonathan as they escape along the waterways on a barge; he ultimately drowns following a confrontation aboard the vessel.
Nicky is eventually drawn to a cavern where she discovers the true origin of the catastrophe. An eccentric inventor, Mr Furbelow, has inadvertently awakened the Necromancer, a sentient stone relic dating back to the legendary age of Merlin. Disturbed from its centuries‑long slumber, the Necromancer perceived the modern world as abhorrent and unleashed psychic shock waves compelling humanity to dismantle its technological civilisation. Because of her innocence and moral clarity, Nicky is able to persuade the entity to return to dormancy, allowing the world the possibility of restoring its former state.
