Summary
Charlie Jade is a rogue private investigator operating within the Alphaverse, a dystopian reality dominated by powerful multinational corporations. While conducting an inquiry into a clandestine desert installation, he is caught in a catastrophic explosion that propels him into the Betaverse, a parallel world markedly different from his own.
As Charlie attempts to navigate this unfamiliar environment, he becomes entangled in a larger inter‑universal conflict involving the Alphaverse, the Betaverse, and the Gammaverse, a pacifist reality whose existence conceals an unexpected and destabilising threat. His investigation gradually reveals the interconnected political, economic, and metaphysical forces binding the three universes together.
The series comprises twenty episodes and represents a joint South African, Canadian production. Rather than adhering to the conventional episodic structure of television drama, it unfolds in the manner of an extended serial narrative, with each episode functioning as a chapter in a continuous storyline. Influenced by science‑fiction noir traditions exemplified by Blade Runner, creator Robert Wertheimer sought to produce a science‑fiction work distinct from mainstream North American television.
Filmed primarily in Cape Town, the series combines futuristic and surreal elements with grounded social themes, including terrorism, corporate exploitation, and the ethical consequences of unchecked technological power. Its pacing is deliberately measured, gradually immersing viewers in its complex narrative and atmospheric world.
