Summary
Milo Rodericks, asserting himself to be the final surviving human, records a message amid the ruins of a post‑apocalyptic Earth. The crisis began in 2016, when a fleet of vast alien vessels appeared worldwide. The beings, designated the Overlords, announced through their “Supervisor for Earth,” Karellen, that they had arrived to inaugurate a global utopia.
Karellen communicated with farmer Ricky Stormgren, adopting the likeness of Stormgren’s deceased wife, and appointed him as humanity’s intermediary. Despite governmental suspicion, the Overlords rapidly eradicated war, disease, hunger, and pollution, initiating what became known as the Golden Age of Humanity.
During this period, Milo, then wheelchair‑bound, was murdered by a drug dealer. The Overlords executed the assailant, resurrected Milo, and restored his mobility. Meanwhile, media magnate Hugo Wainwright covertly organised the Freedom League, a movement dedicated to undermining public trust in the Overlords. After years of failed agitation, the group abducted Stormgren in an attempt to force Karellen’s hand. Karellen rescued him and publicly exposed Wainwright’s conspiracy; Wainwright was later found dead, and Stormgren was dismissed from his role.
Stormgren requested that Karellen reveal his true form, but the alien insisted humanity was not yet prepared. Fifteen years later, Milo, now an astrophysicist—joined the world in witnessing Karellen’s first public appearance. Although the Overlords had become celebrated as “guardian angels” of a near‑perfect Earth, humanity reacted with shock when Karellen emerged, his form resembling traditional depictions of demons.
