Summary
Tucker Burns, having been rejected by forty‑seven prospective employers, finds himself under increasing pressure from his live‑in girlfriend to secure work, any work. In desperation, he accepts a position at The World Chronicle, a tabloid newspaper notorious for its sensational stories about the paranormal. His first assignment concerns a supposed creature terrorising Brooklyn, known as the Brooklyn Bloodsucker.
With assistance from two colleagues, the sharp‑witted and charismatic reporter Grace Hall, and the energetic, street‑savvy photographer Wes Freewald, Tucker begins investigating the case. His scepticism is shaken when he witnesses the creature firsthand, narrowly avoiding it as it crashes through the windshield of Wes’s van.
Long convinced that The Chronicle’s stories were pure fabrication, Tucker struggles to reconcile his disbelief with the evidence before him. Grace’s casual references to her own alien abductions and Wes’s emotional investment in an article about a “mothman in a jar” do little to bolster the paper’s credibility. Yet the newsroom’s extensive archives, filled with anomalous artefacts and alleged extra-terrestrial samples, suggest a deeper truth behind the tabloid’s reputation.
The trio eventually tracks down the so‑called Bloodsucker, discovering that it is in fact a stranded extra-terrestrial envoy who has survived by feeding exclusively on animal blood. They arrange for the alien’s extraction from Earth, securing yet another extraordinary headline for The Chronicle and forcing Tucker to reconsider the boundary between fiction and reality.
