Summary
Chuck Bartowski, a socially awkward twenty‑something, works as a computer technician for the Nerd Herd, a parody of the Geek Squad, at the Buy More electronics retailer. He lives with his best friend, Morgan Grimes, and is supported by his sister, Ellie, a physician who is determined to help him build a stable life and find a romantic partner.
On the night of his birthday, Chuck receives an unexpected e‑mail from his former Stanford University roommate, Bryce Larkin, who has since become a CIA operative. When Chuck opens the message, he inadvertently downloads into his brain the Intersect, a vast database of classified intelligence previously accessible only to the United States government.
The National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency both seek to recover this intelligence and dispatch their own agents, Major John Casey of the NSA and Sarah Walker of the CIA, to retrieve the data. As Chuck begins experiencing involuntary “flashes” triggered by subliminal cues, he is compelled to use the information stored in his mind to assist the government in preventing assassinations, espionage operations, and international terrorist threats. His once‑ordinary life is quickly transformed into a series of high‑stakes missions.
Determined to maintain a semblance of normalcy, Chuck keeps his new role secret from his family and friends. This forces Casey and Walker into an uneasy partnership, united by the shared objective of protecting Chuck, who has become an invaluable, if reluctant, asset to national security.
