Summary
Three lightly armoured human operatives emerge from an underground access shaft onto the surface of a devastated future Earth: the hard‑edged fighter Sarge; the bald, imposing Horst; and Hel, a Black woman equipped with a subdermal communications implant that allows her to hear the guiding Voice. Their appearance immediately draws the attention of a heavily armoured aerial construct known as a Bailey. Eager to field‑test their advanced weaponry, including rocket‑propelled gauntlets, the team engages the machine in combat.
During the skirmish, they succeed in severing and retrieving one of the Bailey’s mechanical arms. However, the confrontation also exposes a deeper threat: Horst is revealed to be a Betrayer unit, a humanoid robot designed to infiltrate human resistance cells and eliminate them. Under heavy blaster fire, Hel and Sarge escape by leaping down a vertical shaft and deploying web‑launchers to slow their descent.
With Sarge critically injured, Hel brings her to an underground surgeon who maintains a supply of cryogenically preserved humans from the early 21st century for organ harvesting. During the procedure, one of the frozen patients is accidentally revived. The woman identifies herself as Cleopatra, who had undergone elective cosmetic surgery in 2001 before being placed into cryogenic storage.
Cleopatra soon learns that the year is now 2525 and that the remnants of humanity have been driven underground by the alien Baileys. As Hel and Sarge continue their struggle for survival against the machines, they are aided by sympathetic robotic allies such as Mauser, who believes he can repurpose the captured Bailey arm into a functional weapon, given sufficient time.
