Summary
The narrative centres on two British protagonists, Tom and Suze. When a sudden nuclear war erupts, both become convinced that their deaths are imminent. In response to what they believe will be their final moments, they choose to seek comfort in one another. Contrary to their expectations, Tom and Suze survive the catastrophe, an outcome that subsequently creates emotional and interpersonal complications.
The series is set approximately nine years after the nuclear conflict. Tom and Suze now have a daughter, Laura, and Britain has devolved into a desolate, post‑apocalyptic landscape. The family travels through this devastated environment, attempting to secure basic necessities and avoid the dangers inherent in a collapsed society.
Eventually, they encounter a settlement formed by a small group of survivors. Life within this encampment proves hazardous. Prolonged exposure to radioactive fallout has left many inhabitants with unusual involuntary behaviours, and chronic shortages of food and water place the community under constant strain. These conditions ultimately give rise to cannibalism, underscoring the severity of their circumstances. The series depicts the group’s efforts to rebuild social structures and maintain order, illustrating the profound difficulty of establishing a functioning civilisation in the aftermath of nuclear devastation.
