Summary
Susan Wheeler, a first‑year medical student at Peach Tree Memorial Hospital, uncovers a disturbing pattern of patients falling into unexplained comas and being transferred to the Jefferson Institute, a secretive long‑term facility run by the unsettling Mrs. Emerson. As Susan investigates with reluctant help from Dr. Mark Bellows and later Dr. Theodore Stark, she becomes the target of intimidation, surveillance, and violence, including threats from Peter Arno, a psychiatric patient acting under Dr. Agnetta Lindquist’s influence.
Her search leads her to the Jefferson Institute, where she discovers patients suspended on metal frames and evidence of a wider conspiracy. After Stark is silenced in a staged accident, Susan and Bellows uncover that hospital staff are being paid to funnel patients into a specific operating room rigged to induce carbon‑monoxide‑based brain death. The Institute is revealed to be a covert organ‑harvesting and human‑experimentation centre, masterminded by Susan’s own professor, and her late grandfather.
Captured and nearly placed into a coma herself, Susan escapes as Bellows and the police raid the facility, arresting the conspirators. The story ends with Susan recovering in hospital, while Bellows receives a cryptic message from Dr. Lindquist, hinting that the conspiracy may not be over.
