Summary
In 2050, Mrs. Pertrude Noah is awarded a national commendation recognising her exemplary achievements as a housewife. As part of the honour, she receives a guided tour of the Britannia Seven, Britain’s most advanced space station, then still positioned on Earth in preparation for launch. During the visit, an accidental activation sequence propels Mrs. Noah and her tour group into Earth orbit.
The unintended crew includes Clive Cunliffe, a journalist; Carstairs and Fanshaw, senior officials of the national space agency; and Garstang, the station’s intellectually limited light‑bulb technician. Meanwhile, on Earth, Garfield Hawk, director of mission control, assumes responsibility for coordinating efforts to return the group safely.
