Summary
Commander Tom Show was a long‑running hosted children’s science‑fiction programme broadcast on WKBW‑TV (channel 7) in Buffalo, New York, with Tom Jolls appearing as Commander Tom. The series aired from 1965 until 1993 and centred on Jolls’ on‑screen persona introducing a rotation of children’s cartoons, science‑fiction material, and educational interludes. Over its twenty‑six‑year run, the programme became a regional fixture, distinguished by its gentle humour, low‑key futurist framing, and Jolls’ consistent presence as host.
The show’s format remained broadly stable: Jolls, in character as Commander Tom, presented segments from a modestly decorated studio set, often incorporating puppets, simple props, and light science‑fiction motifs. Its longevity made it one of WKBW‑TV’s most recognisable local productions, and Jolls’ role as a trusted children’s presenter contributed to his wider profile as a Buffalo broadcaster.
