Summary
The story centres on a group of Centauran refugees whose dying homeworld has driven them to Earth, where they have spent fifteen years covertly preparing to eradicate humanity and claim the planet for themselves. Their strategy relies on subversion rather than open conflict, allowing them to operate without the need for advanced weaponry or large‑scale invasion forces.
Their plans attract the attention of the Inter‑Galactic Council, an interstellar governing body akin to a United Nations of spacefaring civilizations. The Council dispatches an agent to Earth under the identity of Simon King, himself originating from the Centauran star system. King possesses heightened physical and mental abilities designed to counter the Centauran threat.
He is assisted by Mary, a physician who uncovers his extra-terrestrial nature after treating him for injuries sustained in his first encounter with the invaders. King’s only link to his superiors is Control, a series of shifting faces that appear on a triangular communication screen within his apartment.
