Summary

Mike Hansen (Nikolai Nikolaeff), Alison “Pi” Renfrey (Cassandra Magrath), Rebecca “Bec” Chan (Frances Wang), Marcello Di Campili (Paul Pantano), and Abraham “Ram” Foley (Damien Bodie) are five Melbourne high‑school students who share a strong interest in computers, online gaming, and the internet. While playing an online game, each of them uncovers a hidden coded message. The message leads them through a sequence of clues that ultimately brings them to Alexandra Davis (Nicki Wendt), president of the software company Catalyst.

Davis admits that she authored the messages and explains that her company is struggling. She intends to hire one of the teenagers as a game tester to help develop new titles at “The Crash Zone.” She proposes a competition in which the winner will receive the job. Although the contest is intense, she is impressed by their collaboration and ultimately offers positions to all of them. The only exception is Ram, whom she considers too young, though he is still permitted to remain with the group. As their friendships and social lives evolve, the teenagers also encounter Virgil (Matthew Parkinson), a mysterious artificial intelligence that exists within the internet.

In the second series, the group returns from their summer holidays to find Catalyst’s financial situation has deteriorated significantly. Davis has been forced to dismiss most of her staff, and the teenagers fear they may be next. Two new characters are introduced: 12‑year‑old Penny Gallagher and her father, Matthew Gallagher. Penny, who befriends Ram, persuades her father to offer Davis a deal to rescue Catalyst from bankruptcy. Although he knows little about the video‑game industry, Matthew Gallagher is a highly successful businessman and quickly stabilises the company. However, his sweeping changes frequently place him at odds with the staff.
