Summary
Jeff Slade, portrayed by French, is an otherwise unremarkable detective who initially dismisses the claims of the station’s science officer, Holly Turner (Chloë Annett), when she asserts that she possesses a functioning time machine. His scepticism is challenged when a series of events provide circumstantial support for her story, compelling him to reconsider. Determined to verify the truth, Slade eventually persuades Holly to take him back in time. Once there, he shows little regard for Holly’s carefully constructed Laws of Time, preferring instead to test the limits of temporal interference for himself.
Holly, Slade’s reluctant partner in these unauthorised excursions, outwardly resists using the machine for investigative purposes. Nevertheless, she appears quietly relieved to have someone with whom she can share the burden of her secret. Their partnership is marked by an uneasy balance: Slade frequently assumes the initiative, yet Holly ultimately controls the situation by virtue of her exclusive access to the machine. Her willingness to cooperate may stem from her deep loyalty to her father’s invention, with Slade providing the justification she needs to put it to practical use.
Overseeing the pair is Chief Inspector Kate Grisham, a role originally conceived for a male actor before being reimagined for Sue Johnston. Grisham remains entirely unaware of the true nature of Slade and Turner’s activities and is frequently exasperated by Slade’s unorthodox methods, even as he continues to solve cases with seemingly inexplicable efficiency.
